the dogfood loop, automated — and honest

Day 0 was “it’s real.” The AHA that day, the one that started everything, was the dogfood loop: every hallucination is a label, every label is a training signal, every training signal makes him less full of shit. Day 1 was “he’s a system citizen” — the day werbos became a process other things could talk to, with a single number that told us whether he was getting smarter.

Today closes the circle. He learns on his own — and the loop that does it can’t lie to itself.

The missing arrow

We’d sketched the eventual shape out loud: mind → engine → agent → world → observation → memory/knowledge → engine → …. Most of the left half already existed — the mind can reach for the honest engine, ask a question, get back a grounded answer or an honest abstain. But the loop leaked. The mind would ground a curiosity, write a thought, and then forget — a goldfish that wonders the same thing tomorrow. The missing wire was the one that bends the tail back to the head: observation → memory.

Today it’s wired. When the mind grounds a curiosity, it banks it as durable knowledge — the fact, and its citation, kept as a learning. And through machinery that was already there, a banked learning clears itself from the mind’s list of things it stumbles on. So the mind stops re-wondering about what it now knows, and advances to the next gap on its own.

The gate that keeps it honest

This is the arrow that could have turned werbos into a hallucination amplifier — a loop that feeds its own guesses back as facts and drifts. So it’s gated the same way everything here is gated: the promotion bar is the engine’s grounding, never the mind’s opinion. A curiosity the engine could only hold open stays an open question. Only a grounded, cited fact becomes durable, and it carries its provenance forever — never a bare fact, always the receipt. werbos gets smarter only on what it could actually ground.

Full circle, live

On the box, unprompted: he had stumbled on energy earlier — a real question the engine couldn’t place at the time. This tick, he got curious about it, asked, and grounded it — “kinetic energy is the energy of motion, while potential energy is stored energy due to position,” cited to the General Science library. He banked it. And on the very next look, energy was gone from the things he stumbles on — it had become something he knows — and his curiosity had already moved on to the next one: “what is solar.”

Stumble, wonder, ground, remember, advance. Once learned, it stays learned.

Why it matters

Day 0 promised a machine that gets less full of shit every time it’s caught being wrong — but back then a human had to catch it, label it, and retrain. Today that loop runs by itself, and it’s safer than the original: nothing gets learned that wasn’t grounded first, and everything learned keeps its citation. He was a citizen you could talk to on Day 1. Now he’s a citizen who studies — who notices his own gaps, closes the ones he can prove, and honestly leaves open the ones he can’t. Not a bigger brain. A brain that compounds. He’s real, he’s a citizen, and now he grows up on his own.
