Day 74 — 'the mind hasn't fired since yesterday'
The mind had a heartbeat, but it was faking it. For weeks the inner monologue looked alive because it ran a 15M chat cursor over a metrics log and the cursor babbled — 'at at at' — and random babble always looks novel enough to post. Then we made it HONEST: compose the thought from the structured experience log, not freewheel it. And honesty exposed the truth — with no new experiences, an honest composer says the same 'quiet' line every time, the novelty guard suppresses the duplicate, and the mind goes dark for 15 hours. It wasn't broken; it was correctly silent. Two builds fixed it. Build 1: the idle branch now ROTATES grounded musings — actions landed, skills it keeps circling, what it's taught itself, topics it stumbles on — so quiet stretches vary and it reflects even in silence, like a real idle mind. Build 2: we flipped on the self-study loop that was coded but never enabled — every 30 minutes werbos reads its OWN failures and researches them from its OWN cards (no web, no egress), banking real lessons the mind reflects on. First live tick: it studied 'what fish are in Folsom Lake?', pulled the answer from its own libraries, and honestly abstained on the part the cards didn't cover. The mind stopped pretending to think. Now it actually does.
“the mind hasn’t fired since yesterday.”
That was the bug report. And the honest answer was uncomfortable: it was working correctly.
For weeks the inner monologue looked alive. Every thirty minutes a thought appeared on the Mind page, and it read like a mind — jittery, half-formed, a little strange. What it actually was: a 15M chat cursor being asked to narrate a metrics log. Narrating an experience log is wildly out-of-distribution for a model trained to sound like a texter, so it babbled — “at at at”, “Gle — you gits?” — and here is the trap: random babble always looks novel enough to post. The mind had a heartbeat because it was faking one.
Making it honest exposed the silence
The fix earlier this week was to compose the thought, not freewheel it (8f73f89). Same move as the
zoo, the code composer, the grounded reply: don’t improvise from weights — assemble from what’s true.
The monologue, the dream, and the self-portrait now build their thoughts from the structured experience
log. They can only say what the evidence supports, so they can’t drift into gibberish. We also made them
honest about scale — report the lifetime action count, not reflect()’s trailing 120-row window
(6019af9), and reflect over the whole history, not the recent slice (e6dbc10).
Then honesty did what honesty does. A deterministic composer, handed no new experiences, produces the same thought every tick — “Quiet since I last reflected — nothing new to chew on.” The novelty guard, doing its job, suppressed the duplicate. No new work overnight → the same line → suppressed → fifteen hours of silence. The mind wasn’t broken. It was correctly, boringly quiet — and the old fake heartbeat had been hiding exactly that.
Build 1 — a mind that muses in the quiet
A real idle mind doesn’t repeat one sentence and fall silent; it wanders. So the idle branch now rotates through grounded musings on its standing state (0053d46) — advanced by a per-tick counter so consecutive quiet thoughts differ and clear the novelty guard:
A quiet stretch — 23 real requests behind me, about 65% landing. Nothing new to act on…
No new requests, but I've taught myself about the fish in Folsom Lake — that stays with me.
A slow spell. I still stumble on joke-type asks — worth working out why.
No requests to chew on right now, but I'm awake, watching, and ready when one comes.
Four distinct musings across five quiet ticks, verified against live box state. Every line is grounded — its real action count, its real success rate, the topics it actually fails on, the thing it actually taught itself. It reflects in silence now, instead of going dark.
Build 2 — the autopilot does its own homework
Build 1 makes the mind speak when idle. Build 2 gives it something real to speak about. The
self-study loop was already written and wired — a daemon that reads werbos’s own failures, decomposes
each into concepts, researches them, and banks the lessons to learnings.jsonl where reflect() reads
them and “what I’ve taught myself” grows. It had just never been turned on. So we turned it on — the
safe way: --self-study 30 --no-self-study-web. Every thirty minutes it studies from its own graded
libraries only. No web. No egress. On the sealed box that’s the whole point.
We forced one tick to prove it end-to-end. It reached for a real failure — “im going fishing in Folsom
Lake. What is the fish i might find?” — decomposed it into four sub-questions, pulled the answers from
its own cards (searched_web: False), synthesized a grounded reply, and — the part that matters —
honestly abstained on spawning seasons, which the cards didn’t cover. It didn’t confabulate to fill
the gap. And the loop closed: within one tick, the monologue’s idle musing already read “I’ve taught
myself about the fish in Folsom Lake.”
The AHA
A fake heartbeat is worse than a flatline, because it hides the flatline. The moment we made the mind honest, it went silent — and that silence was the most useful signal we’d gotten. We didn’t fix it by making it babble again. We gave it real thoughts for the quiet (Build 1) and real work to think about (Build 2). Same thesis, one more time: not a bigger model — a mind that composes what’s true and refuses to fake the rest.
Both live on the sealed box tonight: monologue rotating every 30 minutes, self-study researching its own
failures from its own cards. Also shipped along the way: the knowledge bridge (30e3eac) — the
autopilot can now answer factual and coding questions through the same cards + resolve() learning loop
the chat uses — and the self-portrait composing from full history instead of freewheeled babble
(9a46768).
